ABOUT

My Story

A Deeper Purpose

I didn't create the Invitation Cycle™ from theory alone. I lived the questions that eventually shaped it.

THE BEGINNING

A Foundation for Life

I joined the United States Air Force at nineteen years old.

The military gave me discipline, responsibility, technical skills, friendships, and a sense of belonging. It taught me how to perform under pressure, solve problems, and keep moving when circumstances were difficult.

Those years gave me confidence, purpose, and a skill that later opened the door to a career in aviation - a field I loved.

WHEN MY LIFE CHANGED

The Descent

At twenty-six, following the end of a long-term relationship. I entered what would become a seven-year period of depression.

I can still remember lying on my waterbed with tears running down the sides of my face. My mind would not turn off.

I replayed conversations, questioned decisions, searched for explanations, and imagined different outcomes. I was trying to think my way out of pain. Instead, I was becoming trapped inside it.

Years later, I would understand this repetitive process as
rumination. I also gave another part of that experience a name:
The PIT - a Place in Time.

"The PIT is a place we experience.
It does not have to become who we are."

- WALTER K. STEWART

SEARCHING FOR A WAY FORWARD

The Climb Back

There wasn't one dramatic moment when everything
suddenly changed.

My journey involved faith, prayer, introspection, relationships, community, learning, and the gradual rebuilding of my life.

Some days progress meant understanding something I had never understood before. Other days it simply meant continuing.

Over time. I began discovering that healing wasn't only about asking. "Why did this happen to me?" but also:

What am I telling myself
about what happened?

What meaning have I

attached to it?

What parts of the experience am I still carrying?

What can I choose now?

THE INVITATION CYCLE™

A Framework for What Comes Next

Eventually, I began seeing a pattern connecting lived experience, psychology, spirituality, and intentional choice. I developed the Invitation Cycle™ to create space within that process:

Create space between the thought and your automatic response.

Interrupt

Become curious about the meaning. beliefs, and emotions beneath it.

Interpret

Bring the pieces together without allowing one experience to define your identity.

Integrate

Decide how you want to respond and what your next step will be.

Intentionally Choose

WHY I DO THIS

A Different Future Is Possible

Today, my writing and work are centered on helping people recognize that a painful chapter of your life can be part of your story without becoming the author of your future.

We cannot always choose what happens to us. But we can learn to participate intentionally in what happens next. That moment between pain and response is the Invitation.

"Awareness creates space.
Intention gives it direction."

- WALTER K. STEWART

The writing behind the framework

Two Books. One Mission.

From the depths of personal struggle to the rediscovery of purpose.

The Invitation Cycle™ is rooted in the personal experiences, military service, and writing of its founder, Walter K. Stewart. His books explore the complexities of depression, emotional suffering, identity, and the human capacity to choose a new direction.

Ideations in the Dark

A Spiritual Framework for Healing Depression and Suicidal Thoughts

Drawing from a seven-year struggle with depression, this deeply personal work examines the destructive patterns of rumination, the search for spiritual meaning, and the journey toward renewed hope.

It introduces the Invitation Cycle™ as a framework for understanding suffering and choosing a more intentional path forward.

About Face

A Military Journey from the PIT of Inner Conflict to Purposeful Living

Written for those who serve or have served, About Face explores the hidden emotional battles of military life, the loss of identity, and the search for meaning beyond the uniform.

Through the Invitation Cycle™, readers are introduced to a path of self-awareness, realignment, and purposeful living.

The Connection: The Invitation Cycle™

These two works share a central conviction: our circumstances may shape our experiences, but they do not have to determine our future.

Interrupt

Interpret

Integrate

Intentionally Choose

What began as a personal journey has evolved into an educational framework designed to help individuals recognize recurring thought patterns, develop greater self-awareness, and practice intentional choices.
